Accessibility Legislation and Compliance

Legislation
There are several pieces of legislature which impact accessibility in Ontario we list the most prominent below, for your reference:

  • The Human Rights Code holds a primary role in accessibility standards, and sets out the legal duty of accommodating people with disabilities.
  • The Ontario Building Code sets minimum accessibility standards for the construction of buildings, some walkways, etc.
  • The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act sets a progressive goal to create a more inclusive Ontario by January 1, 2025 and creates parameters around how people with disabilities should be accommodated, as well as what is fair and required.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a law in Ontario, Canada, that helps make life easier for people with disabilities. It sets rules for things like customer service, jobs, transportation, information, and buildings. The goal is to make Ontario a place where everyone can fully participate by 2025. The law makes sure that businesses and other organizations remove barriers and make things accessible for everyone, no matter their abilities.
